The Road
Family is forever, blood is thicker than water. What wouldn't a father do for his son? What is one supposed to do when everyone is trying to murder one's own flesh for survival.
Cormac McCarthy's tender post-apocalyptical novel "The Road" emphasizes the father's demise to illuminate the meaning of doing anything one has to do to survive and maintain strong for the only loved one that one has left.. Even if those events may lead to death it's all worth it to a father for his child.
The man and his child went through starvation, exposure, illness, and murder in order to survive. Very few good people were left, it was so difficult to come across another human being as kind as the father and the boy. It was almost impossible to be make it in this apocalyptic event, there was so much dead people, but.. that didn't stop the child's dad from giving up. "The boy was all that stood between him and death." (McCarthy 44) The father had to kill "bad guys" trying to steal the few resources him and his son had. The man defended his son like a lion would defend his cubs
The father did everything in his power to bring his boy as far as he could to the south. All that kept them going through unimaginable horrors was each other. After trying his best to prepare the boy to be on his own, the father became ill and was dying. "I'm sorry. You have my whole heart. You always did. You're the best guy. You always were. If I'm not here you can still talk to me." (McCarthy 132) The father died.. He went through all those rough events for his son, his death wasn't in vain because he led the boy to safety and knew that his son would be okay.
It was so hard for the boy to leave his dad behind knowing he couldn't do anything to keep him alive. Luckily the young boy found the "good guys" they were looking for all along, kind people like his father and him; the family rescued the boy and took him in. Although the boy's heart was completely broken he knew his father would always be with him everywhere he went. "He cried for a long time. I'll talk to you every day, he whispered. And I won't forget. No matter what." (McCarthy 264) The boy truly appreciated his father and was going to keep his dad alive in his memory and in his heart forever. He knew his father was no longer there in body, but spiritually.. he never left.
One could meet many people throughout their life, but no one that will unconditionally be there no matter what through whatever and whenever like a parent would be for their child. Life is so short and anything could happen so always value family like there's no tomorrow.
